From bookkeeping to web development

An accountant who used time off work to learn to code

What brought you here?

“My degree is in accounting, but many years ago I was really interested in programming. I recently broke my ankle and was off work — I thought it was a good opportunity to try coding. It was a dream come true for me.”

What changed?

“This program taught me to never give up. I was overwhelmed in the beginning — I didn't think I could do it. I put in a lot of hours in the evening, and I found that I enjoyed it. Finding solutions to problems. As a person, I'm more organised now, and nothing stops me.”

Your 'aha' moment?

“When I made that cube in the project — at first it wasn't working, but then I realised I had to add my own touch to it. When I finished it, I felt like if I can do this, I can do anything.”

What's the dream?

“To work in coding. I come home from work, sit at my computer, and start coding. Some of it doesn't work and some of it does. It has ignited something in me.”

A civil engineer restarting in Canada

She finished the program while caring for her newborn as a single mother

What brought you here?

“I'm a civil engineer and I want to change to software development. I did a front-end course before moving, and I just landed here — I wanted to brush up my skills and learn back-end, which I'd never learned before.”

What changed?

“I thought I'd never make it, since this is my first time being a mom — and I'm a single mom, the only care provider for the baby. I think I'm doing well: I'm caught up with all the content. This has really changed my life, knowing I can do things. The instructors and support team were amazing.”

What's the dream?

“Getting a job in this field and joining the community. I want to become a front-end developer at least, if not full-stack. I just moved here and had a baby — I'm really excited to graduate and start my dream career.”

A translator moving into development

A freelance localization specialist learning full-stack development

What brought you here?

“I'm a linguist — I localize apps, software, websites, and digital marketing content. I bought courses online but they never panned out. I really enjoy working remotely and being self-employed, so that's what brought me back to coding.”

What changed?

“The pace. Learning by myself was less structured. Here there are instructors to ask questions, group work like a real workplace, and a set structure. It's rare to find this kind of flexibility — especially when it's free.”

Your 'aha' moment?

“The API assignment. You're able to pull data from Spotify — who would have thought you can do that? Apparently this year I listened to 46 thousand minutes of music, and I got to use my own data in my project. That's definitely one of the moments I felt a sense of achievement.”

What's the advice?

“Go for it. For everyone interested in learning coding who cannot afford a $30k course, or who is working full-time — it's great to have people guiding you with flexible times. I actually have a friend who just joined.”

A project manager returning to software

She studied computer science, raised her kids, and came back to the field

What brought you here?

“I did my bachelors and masters in computer science and worked in the field until I had kids. I focused on raising my family and put my career on the back-burner. I decided it's high time to restart once my kids reached high school.”

What changed?

“I was never a coder — I always ran away from coding and moved into project management. Now going back, doing OOP and React is a totally different ball game. It's been exponential growth for me. Working code is every coder's joy; every assignment gives me joy.”

What role did the community play?

“It's not just teaching — there's a lot of empathy for people struggling or falling behind. The student success sessions play a really important part. It's a very holistic approach.”

What's the dream?

“My kids are in this field too — now I can have real conversations with them about it. People come to me for advice, and I'd like to continue helping. It also gives me the chance to work from home, which gives me flexibility.”

Family & balance

I have not been a student for many years before taking this course. I'm a mom of 3 boys under 10 and dedicated my life to raising them as a full-time mom. My youngest was starting preschool this year, so I decided to go on this journey of learning a new skill. I have never taken an intensive course like this before, and it felt like I was thrown into the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a half-inflated life jacket. It was really hard in the first couple of weeks because I had to relearn how to learn. If it weren't for the incredibly patient instructors, coordinators, and administration, I would never have completed the first month. It was the encouragement and cheering on from the crew that honestly made me feel like I could do this. Even when I felt like I was asking a dumb question, or when a simple concept just wasn't clicking for me, I never felt judged or shot down for asking it. Little things like that make such a huge difference to beginners of any new skill, especially those with learning disabilities. After experiencing this course, I think I know myself a little better. I know my limits and my capabilities. I also know that you're never too old or too busy to learn something new. Everything is hard when you're just starting out, but it gets easier the more you practise it — let go of meeting other people's expectations and do it for yourself.

First steps

Before starting this milestone, I had absolutely no prior coding experience. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the idea of writing even a simple program, let alone working with complex concepts. However, reaching this point has been a game-changer for me. Through the structured assignments, I learned how to break down problems logically, debug my code, and think more like a developer. Concepts that once seemed intimidating now feel within my reach. Each challenge helped solidify my understanding, and the hands-on nature of the projects allowed me to apply what I was learning in a meaningful way. The support I received was also instrumental in my progress. Whether it was through feedback on my code, explanations that simplified difficult topics, or encouragement when I felt stuck, I always felt like I had the resources to push forward. I will continue to practice, as it still takes me time to process everything, but I know I will continue to get better the more I put into learning JavaScript.
